AURORA, Ore. (AP) — A man was killed and an officer was injured in a shooting outside a truck stop south of Portland near Aurora, Ore.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that around 6:15 a.m. Monday, deputies were called to the Flying J Truck Stop after a man wanted for weapons offenses was seen at the outside.

He barricaded himself inside a van and the Marion County Interagency SWAT team was called. The sheriff’s office said after three hours “gas ammo” was deployed in the van, he got out and “several shots were fired”.

Woodburn police officer Jesse Ponce, 32, was shot dead and taken to a hospital in Portland, where he underwent surgery and is expected to survive, according to a news release.

The sheriff’s office said help was rendered, but the person identified as Micaiah Clinton, 27, of Portland, died at the scene.

Clinton had outstanding warrants for a felon in possession of a firearm trying to evade police, the sheriff’s office said.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Tyler Morrow has been placed on administrative leave. He has worked at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office since 2012.

Oregon State Police are investigating with the Marion County District Attorney’s Office.
