Labor pledged ahead of the election to invest $80 million in new rest stops for truckers across the country.

The truck pit stop initiative forms an important part of Labor’s freight industry policies ahead of the upcoming federal election.

Announced by Senator Glenn Sterle, shadow infrastructure minister Catherine King and Labor candidate Zaneta Mascarenhas, the new truck stop project would commit funds for the construction of new and improved rest areas for truckers.

“Truckers travel day and night to keep Australia moving,” says Sterle.

“But despite their importance to our economy and our way of life, motorists are too often forced to put up with a dire lack of suitable rest areas.”

The $80 million commitment is the first time Sterle has admitted to seeing a federal commitment going “directly to improving the safety and productivity of our truckers.”

But this isn’t an overall increase in funding — Steele says consulting and tailoring specific projects to truckers’ needs is key to the initiative’s success.

Labour’s new truck stop campaign will help prevent driver fatigue

“Most importantly, specific projects will be selected in close consultation with the men and women who have their hands on the wheel day in and day out,” Steele said.

“It is imperative that our truckers have quality rest. The only way for them to achieve this is to have access to suitable rest areas where they need them and to be able to rely on them. “

Labor says the issue of truck stops is an issue that has been made clear by the transport industry.

Having also made its way through the recent Senate inquiry into the trucking industry, Labor said now is the time to act on the issue and pledge money to put truckers ahead of the game. their list.
