The police investigate the death at the stop of the pilot truck


Effingham, Illinois- (Effingham Radio) – On September 18, 2021, at approximately 3:15 p.m., Effingham City Police responded to the Pilot Truck Stop on N. Rt. 45 in Effingham, Illinois, referring to an accident with injuries. Upon arrival, officers found a dead black man lying in the parking lot at the Pilot Truck stop.

The coroner’s office was called in with the Effingham Police Department Investigations, the Illinois State Police Accident Reconstruction Unit and the Police Crime Scene Unit of the State of Illinois. Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris responded to the scene as a mutual aid agreement due to Effingham County Coroner’s staff during the Wabash River incident.

Preliminary investigation revealed Eric Howard, black man, 73 from Fort Worth Texas was working on his vehicle in the right rear of his tractor-trailer in the parking lot and was struck by another tractor-trailer driven by David Carr, 57, of Clarksville, Tennessee. Eric Howard was pronounced dead at the scene by Fayette County Coroner Dave Harris.

Eric Howard was transported to the mortuary at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Effingham, Illinois by the Effingham County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21 at the St. Anthony Hospital Mortuary.

The investigation is underway by Illinois State Police, City of Effingham Police and the Effingham County Coroner’s Office
