‘I thought it was just an empty promise’, but Holyhead roadhouse worker gets new job after Brexit

Truck stop workers made redundant when the site was closed to make way for a Brexit border post have secured jobs at the new Holyhead facility.

The UK government bought the Cybi Park site off Roadking last year. Twenty jobs were lost when it closed.

HMRC are the construction of a £45m Inner Border Facility (IBF) in the field where approximately 200 people will be employed once fully operational.

It will carry out new customs checks on traffic passing through Holyhead.

Ynys Môn MP Virginia Crosbie said she had pushed for the site to be based in Holyhead and for consideration to employ redundant staff at Roadking. She said nine former truck stop workers have been hired so far.

One of the site’s new security guards, Corrine Cargill, said: “I worked at Roadking for over two years as a housekeeper and loved it because the team were fantastic. When we found out we were going to be fired, I was gutted.

“When HMRC came to speak to us and said they would find jobs for those who wanted them, I thought that was just an empty promise.

“But they kept their word and all of their contractors were told to give priority to excess Roadking staff for the work.

“Môn CF supported me to retrain me as a security guard last October and Mitie then offered me a position in their security team at the IBF. Most of the former Roadking team also work at the IBF, so although we all have different jobs for different contractors, we’ve kept our ‘family’ together.

“I’m paid more than I was, my job is more secure, and I’m doing work I never imagined I could do so close to my hometown.”

Ms Crosbie added: ‘It was really great to catch up with the Roadking team (inset photo) and see very clearly how this investment in Holyhead has changed circumstances for them and many other local people.

“I was inspired by Corinne’s story and truly moved to hear how much of a difference it has made to her and to many others who now have good long-term jobs. My priority is always to bring even more investment and jobs to our island.”
