Chicopee truck stop proposal sparks controversy

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) — The Chicopee Planning Board met Thursday to discuss proposed plans for a new truck stop on Burnett Road.

22News was at the meeting on Thursday, where some residents said they were unhappy because there is already another truck stop next door, and some said it would impact the quality of life in their neighborhood .

Chicopee Councilman Derek Dubosz represents Ward 6, which includes the Burnett Road area. “There are a lot of proposed developments in Ward 6. I don’t think it’s all for the best and I really need people to step up and pay attention to what’s going on,” Dubosz said.

The proposed truck stop would include an 11,000 square foot rest area.

“We have a lot of traffic concerns, we have health issues, I think traffic is going to cause a lot of distribution on Burnett Road, and I just don’t think it’s the right solution for our area,” he said. said Dubosz. .

At City Hall, Burnett Road residents were able to voice their concerns and show the City of Chicopee why they believe this new truck stop would negatively impact their quality of life.

“Our quality of life is going to be affected and the neighborhood doesn’t want another truck stop right next to another,” said neighborhood resident David Amo.

Neighborhood residents fear it will impact supply and demand, commuting and the overall health of the community.

“We have given a high rate of asthma which is affecting the health of our children who live in our neighborhood. I haven’t met anyone in our neighborhood who would like another truck stop. Everyone is against it,” Amo said.

Currently, this proposal is still under consideration by the City of Chicopee.
