1 suspect arrested, another wanted in fatal shooting at truck stop


CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WWBT) – A person in Chesterfield has died after being shot in a truck stop parking lot.

On Sunday, May 1 at 6:05 p.m., police responded to multiple calls regarding a shooting that occurred in the parking lot of the Pilot Travel Center on Ruffin Mill Road.

Upon arrival, officers found a person with multiple gunshot wounds and learned that the suspect vehicle had fled the area.

The victim, Keon A. Clanton, 35, was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died.

Chris Wells was a driver who was only two locations from where the shooting happened and said he tried to help Clanton.

“I heard about five or six shots. Two cars went down, and I jumped up to check on a lady, and she said there was a man on the ground,” Wells said. “I went to see if I could help her in any way, and I was just telling her not to die and come back, and rub her arm, and that was pretty much it until let the police come.”

A short time later, police responded to an accident near the intersection of W. Hundred Road and Route 1 involving the shooting vehicle. Darnell S. White, 32, was taken into custody at the scene.

Officers are still looking for a second suspect who fled the scene.

This caused an emergency alert to be sent to county residents on Sunday evening and then a second alert to those living between Osborne Road and John Tyler Community College.

“I did it, I was just a little scared, just a little scared to know that there was someone on the loose, someone dangerous,” said Miriam Riley, who received the alert. . “I hope everyone is protected and vigilant and just watching their backs.”

Chesterfield Police said on Monday afternoon the alert had expired.

White is charged with second degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
